I know our top picture is incredibly out of date - but I love it because it captures perfectly my life at one point. So it will stay.

Utah: Dinosaurs!

On Monday we went to the gardens at Thanksgiving Point to see "the dinosaurs".  We saw them last year as well and I was excited they were doing the exhibit then.  Brock didn't come with us because he was helping grandpa with something.  We also met Brooke, Caroline, Mikey, and my mom.

Dane and Eve bounced back and forth between terror and thrill the whole time.

After the group photo (minus Mads) the older kids went off on their own to explore.  I think they all enjoyed their "alone" time in such a beautiful place.  Although the waterfall was turned off, so that was a huge bummer.

Utah: Hanging out at the Hanna's

We went to Utah for our annual summer trip.  It was interesting becasue the trip was kind of unique.  Our summer was bsy with a lot of other vacations or camps.  There wasn't a good time to fit in our utah trip.  I thought maybe they wouldn't want to go or just got for 3 or 4 days.  I was pleased to find out that most of their number one priorities was a Utah trip.  They wanted to cancel some of the other vacations before Utah, and they wanted a whole week.  So we had to smash it in between other things.  Actaully as soon as the boys come home from their week long young mens camp we went straight to Utah. Also, the Herbert's were in Arkansas so we were unable to spend any time with them in Mapleton, that was sad for all of us.

Another unique thing was that Jason didn't come with us.  That used to be the norm, but since 2020 he has come with us every time we go to Utah.  He came for many reasons: 1) He was working from home and could work just as well from Utah so, why not?  2) with the 2 babies I needed some help. 3)His dad had cancer so he took every opportunity to go see/help.  and of course 4) we all love him and would rather have him with us - this is very true for the kids, they were very disappointed when they found out he wasn't coming.  While I like when he comes I was exctied to do the trip for the first time by myself with 6 kids.  I never wanted to be the kind of woman who felt she couldnt handle all her kids on her own, and you only get strong muscules from using them.  So i really appreciate opportunite like this to excerziae my mom musscles.

However, I did have another driver in the car, which made my life/job a whole lot easier!
we got there very late saturday night, and the next day was fast sunday, so ater gong tochurch eeryone came over for a breakfast 'brake that fast"

Below are just some random pictures of hanging around the house.

Everyone likdes jumping on the tramp
The older kids alwasy come to Utah with a list of shows they want to watch.  Grandma has all the streaming services, so the trip always turns into a marathon of sorts.

Megan and Noah have found each other.  I have said since they were little "if htey could stop fighting they would be bes tfriends, they are so similar."  Well, it happened.  They spend about an hour or two every day talking - almost exclusivly about books or shows.  It is pretty sweet.

and of course.. basketball.

Not pictured: sleeping on the tramp, smores, taking milo on walks, going down the the Bells, playing in the basement.

Boys Camp

The boys headed off to stake boys camp the same week the girls left.  It was weird having all 4 of our teens be gone for the same week for church camps.  A few years ago I would have assumed Jason and I would also be at the camps as leaders, but our callings have not gone that way (yet... I hope).  And it was going to be weird to just have Dane and Eve at home.

I was so grateful to our stake leaders for putting on a stake young mens camp.  They didn't "have to", but they did.  They also went all out.  These men love these boys.  One leader, Ryan Ahlstrom, wanted them to fish in a lake that didn't have any fish.  So he backpacked hundred of fish into the lake.  Back and forth, back and forth, dropping bags of fish each time.  I think it took them like 20 hours to do that.  Just so these boys could catch fish.  They ended up coming home a day early because a bear kept "attacking".

Tornado

Growing up in Salt Lake City I always knew 2 things.  1) at any moment we could all die from a massive earth quake.  The earth quake isn't a matter of if, but when.  And 2)we were protected from tornadoes.  When we moved to Denver they got switched on me, no earth quakes but tornadoes.  However after living here 10 years I realized that Tornadoes only occur on the east side of the range - we are too close to the mountains.  My phone get alerts for tornadoes often, but they are always out by the airport.  So when I was driving Noah therapy and we got an alert on our phones for a tornado I ignored it.  But then we got another.  Noah looked at his phone and said "it says the tornado is happening in our location"  I told him he wasn't reading it right and to tell me what counties.  I pulled over and looked at my phone, he was right, it said a tornado was coming right to our area.
I didn't believe it, so we kept driving, I noticed the weather was changing, it was windier but also a weird calm and the clouds looked weird.   I decided we would go home,  as I flipped a u-ey to go back home things changed quick and I knew we wouldn't make it back, so I pulled into a neighborhood that I felt like would offer us protection and waited it out.  I was right about the neighborhood.  The townhouses are close together and really high and from our perspective there wasn't a tornado, there was barley a storm.  The garbage  cans didn't even move.  When it was over we drove out of the neighborhood to find chaos all around us.  Giant trees were uprooted and fences were blown over.  Then I got this text picture from my neighbor.
NO!!!!  Our beautiful tree!!  We love our tree.  Jason was at work until 9 om that night, I had noah with me, and all my other kids were at home.   Eve and Dane are particularly scared of the weather and we have been trying hard to tell them that they are not in danger.  Brock was baysitting, dane was awake, but eve was still asleep.  I told him to take them in the basement and play, but not to say anything about the tornado. We rushed home to check out the damage.

I knew we needed to get it out of the road  asap and couldnt wait for  Jason to get home.  I put out a fb post for a chain saw and got a few offers.  I handed my teenagers hand clippers, told them to start clipping while I went and gathered chain saws.

When I got home about 15 minutes later I was greeted with an army of helpers with their own tools.  I was overhwlemed with gratitude for the men, women, and teens who came to help.
We had Brother Stolk, Brother weister, and Daved.  Rick and Sami Burt.  Chris West and his sons.  The oakerstroms, coulsons, Marleys, dave gardner, the marley neighbor that I had never met (and still havnen't seen sicne).  Rachel came down and took care of Dane and Eve all night and Gage helped with the tree.

The neighborhood girls.  This doesnt have anything to do with the tornado.  These girls all lived on this street and have been friends since they were babies/toddlers.  As they have grown up they have stopped hanging out.  On the night of the tornado everyone was out side helping.  Honestly, mot of the girls refused to help (except Sami).  But it did my heart good to see them together again.

I had zero expectations that we would get "done" by the time Jason got home, I thought at most we could get the bulk of it out of the street.  But because of every ones hard work and service (ESPECIALLY MY 4 TEENS) we worked for about 5 hours straight and we got it all done.  Jason came home right as it started getting dark and worked with us the last hour binding the last of the bushels and providing clean up.  It was so nice getting a fresh worker at the end.  We were weary.

Before we went to bed our yard looked like this.  So sad.  But amazing we did that all in one night.

We had the stump for a while and while the kids and I were in Utah Jason and Scott Coleman tore it out.

Which also broke our sprinklers, so you know... one thing after another.    We have missed our tree so much.  My flowers are sad not having the shade all day.  Me and the babies would spend our mornings in the shade of the tree in the sand box while I would eat breakfast, read, or weed.  Those days are long gone as we now have full sun in the mornings (that is why I made the sandbox in the front yard - I have been having breakfast on my porch in the mornings for 10 years and now... its over - so sad!)

Having a tornado come through also gave us opportunities to serve.  We were overwhelmed with the generosity of our friends and neighbors.  as they worked along side us in our own disaster we learned that many of them had downed trees or fences but came to our aid first.  My children were very touched by this and for the next 2 or 3 days went out and either helped those who helped us, or helped anyone who needed help.  This was true for church on Sunday, everyone went to church in work clothes and after sacrament meeting every family was assigned a zone to go help clean up.    it was a great experience.

Girls Camp

After the Birches left it was off to girls camp. I was so happy they were going to girls camp together.  It was stake camp this year so they were camping in similar grades throughout the stake, so they didn't see each other much.  But it worked out great as they made friends with other lds girls they didn't other wise know.

Both of them were excited to go.  I am so grateful they both love girls camp.  I love girls camp.  Part of me was so sad not to go, but I also think it was best for them to do it a few times with out me.  I hope they don't do it every time with out me.  But a few times can be good.

A bit of a difference in the before and after picture.  Love those "Saturday girls" (President Lund oct 2022)

We have a good ward (not all pictured here).  It has its problems (all wards do), but my girls love young womens, love church, feel loved, and want to go. They also both serve the other girls a lot.  They often talk together about how to help or include some of the struggling girls and every week they seem to be making cookies or cupcakes for a girl in the ward.  They are also spiritually fed.  This is all I could ask for in a YW program!  Madison particularly loves the older girls.

When they first got there they were supposed to get in groups and do a lip sink, but they could only use one prop or costume - so maddie got creative and wore a costume  to girls camp so they didn't have to pick a costume.  Maddie is so fun and creative and makes everything a party.

Megan was told not to bring any books - and while it was hard and she talked to everyone she could to get them on her side, (from what I know) she didn't bring a book and she didn't die.  So I am proud of her.

I will see if I can get them to blog about it.
