For our ward service project during Christmas we were helping put together bags of food for some underprivileged children to take home over the Christmas holiday. Different families volunteered to collect certain food items and we became the Cup of Noodle Family. Our job was to collect 1800 cups of Cup of Noodles (our sign said 1100 - but it got increased after we made our yard sign). We were a little nervous about how we are going to do this, but we decided to enlist the neighborhood and everybody that we could think of to try to help us collect our Cup of Noodles. This ended up being the best Christmas service project. The kids were so involved and so committed to collecting these Cup of Noodles for the underprivileged children. They went door-to-door with flyers and signs in our neighborhood letting people know we were collecting them. Every day in the morning and after-school they raced to check our front porch to see if anybody had dropped anything off, and when they did it was like Christmas morning, they were jumping up and down so excited. They would fight over who got to count them, record them, and carry them upstairs to our guest bedroom. I thought after a few days they would get sick of this and fight over who didn't have to do those thing things, but that never happened, they truly were so excited to help. It was so cool, everybody was involved and everybody was loving it. At the end of the collecting. We had to carry all of these down to the car which took quite a bit of work, and then carry them from the car into the church, and then we had to put one, two, or three of everything into bags. The whole thing took a lot of work, but it really never seem like a lot of work, it was such a blessing for us to be focused on other people at this time. As you read from other posts the end of November and beginning of December was a hard time for our family, so it was so great to get outside of ourselves and just focus on collecting 1800 cups of Cup of Noodles!
We would regularly come home to find this. Seeing other peoples generosity just warmed our hearts.
We would then stack them if they came on pallets or count them and put 40 in a garbage bag.
We had all sorts of math going. We had to count, multiply, add, add, add, then subtract everything from 1800.
If you ever wondered what 1800 Cups of Noodle look like - this is it:
We also had to go to a lot of food drives that other people hosted and collect the cup of noodles and take them to our house. There was so much hauling things back and forth - but I can not say it enough - they had such a good attitude about it.
Then we got to the church with all the other families (Jello family, mac and cheese family, granola bar family, etc)
We carried our stuff from our upstairs extra bedroom into our spot in the gym.
oh - and we also wrapped 800 books for them to get for Christmas.
